Systematic classification and distribution
Species: V. berus
Il Marasso (Vipera berus) is common in the areas of central and northern Italy. It is a snake that can be found very easily even up to 2,200 meters above sea level.
Its bite causes a lot of pain: the injected poison is not fatal for humans, however it is necessary to intervene promptly with adequate care.
It reaches a length of about 60 cm and has a rather large body. The typical color of this reptile is dark brown with characteristic yellow-beige zigzag designs. The livery is bright, the ventral area is lighter. Black specimens are quite common.
Hunt small reptiles, amphibians, nestlings and mammals.
